Canberrans Shaun Crain and Nick Nell are set for the adventure of a lifetime when they join a convoy of teams rallying, as part of Australia’s largest independently-run fundraiser for Cancer Council.

It’s not a race, it’s a challenge to drive cars worth $1500 or less across Australia via some of it’s toughest roads to raise money for Cancer research. This remarkable event has raised more than $33 million since the first rally in 2010.

To participate each team must raise a minimum of $5,000 with a target of $2million overall.

The Canberra team is called WHEELTURTLES.COM, with a Turtle theme for the car.

Shaun and Nick are former work colleagues in the IT industry who also have a passion for cars, and like all of us, have had family members or friends impacted by cancer. Both Nick and Shaun have participated in motorsport for many years and think this event is a great opportunity to get out and see more of Australia.

“Our chosen vehicle for the journey is a 2005 Ford Territory (2WD) that was being used for several years as a storage shed by its previous owner in Queanbeyan NSW.. Filled to the roof with boxes and loose clothing and many layers or dirt and dust inside. It had the positive of being the right price ($1500 on the dot) and most recently registered in the ACT.” Says Shaun.

“Embracing the Turtle theme, we have added a mascot Turtle on the roof of our green and black car, plus accessories to hold the mandated extra wheel and fuel cans. Some really cheap vinyl wrap has been put on (very badly) by us, and our sponsor stickers are in place.”, says Nick, who is the mechanically minded of the pair and has given the car some much needed mechanical maintenance.
