It’s hoped a tax on vacant shopfronts could be the solution to reducing the rates of empty businesses in Canberra’s suburbs.
ACT Greens MLA Johnathan Davis will enter a motion into the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, calling for the idea to be investigated.
Mr Davis said commercial property owners should need to ensure that they’re meeting community expectations.
“My constituents in Tuggeranong have been frustrated for some time about the state of a number of local shopping centres that have remained vacant for a long time – some for more than 10 years.”
As part of an inquiry, it would also determine the exact number of properties that remain vacant throughout the ACT.
