Rugby great David Pocock has made history, officially claiming victory in the ACT’s senate race following last month’s federal election.
The Australian Electoral Commission declared the final results on Tuesday, announcing Pocock as the ACT’s second Senate representative behind Labor’s Katy Gallagher.
The historic declaration represents the first time the ACT has elected an independent candidate at a federal level.
It’s also bad news for the Liberal Party with Zed Seselja loosing his seat and marking the end of the party’s ACT representation federally.
In a statement online, Pocock has thanked supporters.
“It is an incredible honour to be able to serve a community I love.”
He’s also paid tribute to his predecessor.
For the first time, we have an independent voice representing the ACT in federal parliament.
I acknowledge the work of outgoing Senator @ZedSeselja after 9 yrs representing us & wish him & his family all the best.
I’m committed to listening & representing all Canberrans.
