Recently, Lewis from the Newsroom stumbled across a copy of the Canberra Times dating back to 1974.
In the weeks since, every Friday, Kate & Nige have picked a story from the paper, reflecting on Canberra’s past as captured by the articles written at the time.
This week, Real Estate caught the attention of the Mix Breakfast show with a report detailing the average cost of homes in Canberra in September of 1974.
According to the report, Houses would set you back about $35,000 while units were selling for $22,000.
Fast forward almost half a century, according to a recent CoreLogic report, the median price of a house in Canberra is now going for about $887,000 – that’s an increase of 2,432%.
So Nige & Billy decided to put themselves to the test, to see if they could guess the asking prices of houses up for sale as listed in the paper’s property guide 48 years ago.
