Overnight there were six Australian’s in action on Day 1 of Wimbledon.

Thanasi Kokkinakas will be the only one progressing however, following his straight sets victory over Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak. He will now take on former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic on Wednesday.

Qualifier Max Purcell has missed out on the second round, following a gruelling five set thriller. Purcell fought back from two sets to love down against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, before eventually going down 3-6, 6(0)-7, 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, in just under four hours.

John Millman and James Duckworth both also went down in four sets, with Millman being defeated by Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic, whilst Duckworth went down to Andy Murray under the roof on Centre Court.

Only two of our four Aussie females were able to take the court for their day 1 action.

Maddison Inglis was the only one to finish her match, going the distance against Dalma Galfi of Hungry, unfortunately losing 7-5, 3-6, 4-6.

Astra Sharma is locked at a set a piece against Tatjana Maria, with fading light halting their match at the end of the second set, with the score currently 6-4, 3-6. That match will continue tomorrow.

Meanwhile Daria Saville (nee Gavrilova) and Zoe Hives will have to wait until tomorrow to play their opening round matches. Their matches were scheduled to be the final matches for their respective courts, however with no artificial light on the outside courts, the decision was made to move them to tomorrow morning local time.

Tomorrow we will also see Canberran local Nick Kyrgios take to the court, looking to defeat 22-year-old Brit Paul Jubb.

19th Seed Alex de Minaur, Ajla Tomljanovic, Alexi Popyrin, Jamiee Fourlis, and Jordan Thompson will also play their first round matches in Day 2 on Tuesday night.
